Target: Mark Gearan, Chairman of New York State Gaming Commission
Goal: Praise the decision to protect a state park from a proposed casino development project
Recently, a proposed 238-acre casino and resort was denied for development in a state park. The state park is crucial for the area’s watershed, native wildlife, and recreational activities. The casino would have brought an increase in traffic as well as destroyed the area’s scenic integrity. A previous ForceChange petition had encouraged the New York State Gaming Commission to deny the request for this destructive development project. Thank the commission for its progressive decision to stop this casino from its potentially detrimental environmental impacts.
Genting Americas sought approval for a casino in Sterling Forest State Park. This state park, located in Tuxedo, New York, boasts 22,000 acres of natural area. The Appalachian Trail, one of America’s most famous long-distance hiking paths, traverses six miles through the park. If the casino was approved, the development would have been seen from the trail. The park’s appeal would have been compromised by the casino’s hotel, ski area, and multi-car garage. The gaming facility would have expected to host 6.9 million visitors a year. The quaint town of Tuxedo, New York would have struggled with an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and waste.
The state park is crucial for wildlife, with 95 percent of the park preserved for bird conservation. Migratory birds rely on Sterling Forest for survival. Luckily, New York’s Gaming Commission denied the casino’s request because of environmental impacts. By signing this petition, you are supporting and thanking the commission’s decision to save Sterling Forest State Park from development.
Dear Chairman Gearan,
The New York State Gaming Commission’s decision to deny the construction of Genting Americas’ casino in Tuxedo, New York has protected the integrity of Sterling Forest State Park. The state park is a crucial natural area for the surrounding community, native wildlife, and migrating wildlife. The casino would have had detrimental environmental impacts on this pristine and coveted land.
I want to thank you for making this progressive and incredible decision for the environment. The Sterling Forest is crucial for migrating birds and the area’s watershed, as well as recreational hiking. The casino would have brought an increase in traffic and waste. I hope you continue to make decisions with the environment and nature’s integrity in mind. Thank you for saving Sterling Forest State Park.
