Target: Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson
Goal: Investigate the desecration of a community memorial built to honor a teen shot and killed by a police officer
A driver ran over and destroyed the memorial that was built in honor of Michael Brown, the black teenager who was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson on the street where the memorial is located. This is not the first time the memorial has been attacked–it was burned down in September after a month of protests by Brown’s community over what they feel was a wrongful death. The arson was not investigated by police, but was very likely to be a racist show of disrespect to Brown’s grieving friends and family.
It’s no coincidence that this memorial has been destroyed yet again. However, the police chief of the Ferguson, Missouri has said that he doesn’t think a crime has even been committed, and therefore there will be no investigation into the incident. Considering how little respect the local police department has shown to a community that’s trying to come to terms with the ever-present threat of being killed at their hands, this is not surprising but is still unacceptable.
This act of disrespect must be investigated. Considering the way the local community has been harassed and bullied by the police, and the resulting tensions between them, the least that the department could do is conduct an investigation and catch the person responsible. Sign this petition to demand that the Ferguson police department make some effort to show respect to the dead and the grieving.
Dear Chief Jackson,
Recently, the memorial to Michael Brown in Ferguson that’s located on the street where he was fatally shot by Officer Darren Wilson was destroyed when a driver ran it over in a car. As you surely know, this is not the first time that the memorial has been vandalized. It’s clear that this is a racist attack on a community that is simply trying to mourn the loss of a young man and, by extension, the frequent loss of their youth at the hands of white police officers.
No matter what you think about Mike Brown, Darren Wilson, or any part of the situation in Ferguson and beyond, you must feel that it’s wrong for a memorial to a dead teenager built by those who love him to be wantonly destroyed. It’s an act of incredible disrespect and should be immediately investigated. Your refusal to do so will only serve to increase the already-thick tensions between the black community and the police department.
I urge you to launch an investigation into this terrible action. Even if the perpetrator cannot be found, an investigation will show to the Ferguson community and the world at large that you at least care a little bit about the lives of black individuals and the basic human rights of the black community. Show some respect for those you are meant to serve.
