Target: Alabama’s Judicial Inquiry Commission
Goal: Initiate removal process for the Chief Justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court for Christian supremacist views
The Chief Justice of Alabama’s supreme court recently spoke at a Republican event and criticized nondenominational invocations at city council meetings. This comes after a history of controversial religious remarks and conservative political activism. Urge the committee charged with policing Alabama’s judges to remove the Chief Justice.
Roy Moore is the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. After being removed from his station as chief justice once before for defying a federal order to remove a statue of the Ten Commandments from the Alabama Judicial Building, Moore regained his position in a recent general election. Apparently emboldened by his popular appeal, Moore has doubled down on the kind of religiously-charged behavior that got him fired in the first place, lamenting the fact that an agnostic woman was allowed to open a city council meeting in Huntsville, Alabama with a secular, non-Christian invocation. “I’ll say this in Huntsville because I think it needs to be said in Huntsville,” Moore said to a gathering of the Madison County Republican Men’s Club. “There is one God and it is the God on which this nation was founded. And it’s the God of the Scriptures. I don’t need applause for that. It’s a truth in history and it’s a truth in law.”
Moore has revealed time and time again his true bias and agenda. A person with such political motivations should not be anywhere near a judge’s seat, to say nothing of the seat of a Chief Justice of a state Supreme Court. Sign the petition below to demand that proceedings are put in motion to remove Moore from office.
Dear the Judicial Inquiry Commission of Alabama,
I am writing you today about the behavior of the Chief Justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court. Chief Justice Roy Moore has proven time and time again that he is profoundly biased and unfit to serve in his position. I urge you to file complaints with Alabama’s Court of the Judiciary to remove Moore from his station.
Moore is a known Christian supremacist. Most recently he criticized city council meeting invocations that were anything but Christian in basis, but his history is littered with examples of this philosophy. He has drawn connections between government secularism and Islamic Sharia law, claiming that separating church and state leaves us vulnerable to an Islamic takeover. He has repeatedly associated with the Republican Party, and on two separate occasions campaigned for governor and president on the Republican ticket. Most notably, he refused a federal order to remove the statue of the Ten Commandments from the Alabama Judicial Building. Indeed, this incident proved Moore so bullheaded and biased that he was removed from office by the Court of the Judiciary for it.
The fact that Moore was reelected as Chief Justice by a popular vote has no bearing on his fitness to hold the position. I demand you hold Moore to the same standard which in the past found him unfit to serve as Chief Justice. File complaints with the Court of the Judiciary so that it can remove Moore from his position as Chief Justice.
