Target: West Springfield, Massachusetts Animal Control Officer, Hannah Chapman
Goal: Support the charge of parents who allowed their son to abuse their pet pit bull
A West Springfield couple has refused animal abuse charges after allowing a young boy to cruelly abuse a pit bull puppy in their home. Jason Nieves and Jacquelyn Hadley were charged in Springfield District Court, a few months after they gave the dog to the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center. Details soon emerged from the adoption center that Nieves pretended that his injured dog was a stray when he turned it in to them. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) and the West Springfield Animals Control officers investigated the family’s situation and brought felony charges against both adults and the young child.
Court documents show that in interviews, the boy admitted to abusing the puppy and acknowledged hitting the dog with a shovel. According to the reports, he appeared to show enjoyment when recounting the animal abuse. The MSPCA alleges the family did not provide their pet with adequate pain medication or veterinary care, even though they knew the abuse was happening.
Even with all of these allegations, the couple still insists that the dog was treated well in their household. The puppy is currently working with a volunteer from a canine rehabilitation program. The good news is that the puppy is recovering from the abuse, but it still can’t walk due to brain damage and injuries to its hind legs.
Please sign this petition to support the charges placed on this couple and thank both of the organizations for helping this pit bull back to good health.
Dear Officer Hannah Chapman,
A man and woman were recently charged with animal abuse after it was discovered that they allowed a juvenile to abuse a pit bull puppy in their home. The puppy has suffered brain damage and leg injuries that are now inhibiting him from walking properly. The puppy is working hard with a canine rehabilitation program to regain its strength. It is disgusting that adults would allow a child to continuously abuse a dog over and over again.
Thank you for teaming up and prosecuting these people for allowing a juvenile to viciously abuse this innocent animal. The MSPCA’s goal has always been to make sure that all animals are kept safe and that abusers are brought to justice, and this situation has been no different. Thank you for all that you do for animals all around the world.
