Celebrate Decision that Grants Orangutan Human Rights

Target: President of Argentina Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner

Goal: Celebrate decision to grant an orangutan human rights

A 20-year-old orangutan has been granted some basic human rights thanks to a lawsuit filed by an animal rights group. The orangutan will now be sent to an animal sanctuary where she will live the rest of her life in relative peace. This case should be celebrated, as it could pave the way for more humane treatment of other intelligent animals.

Sandra, who was the subject of the animal rights lawsuit, is a 20-year-old orangutan. Born in Germany, she was transported to an Argentina zoo where she has lived for the majority of her life. The case regarding giving her more humane treatment came from several animal rights groups that filed for a habeas corpus lawsuit. The issue fought over the unlawful detention or imprisonment of a person. The court recognizes Sandra as a “non-human person,” but also gave her certain freedoms. One of these freedoms is the right to transport her to a sanctuary.

In New York, a similar case involving a chimpanzee took place. The chimpanzee was a pet, and lived in squalor. Animal rights activists wanted to grant the chimp human rights, but New York courts struck down the case. Sandra’s case could prove pivotal in paving the way for more humane treatment of other intelligent animals.

This decision should be celebrated. You can applaud President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and the animal rights groups involved in this case by signing this petition.

Dear President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner,

I am writing this letter to applaud your country’s decision to grant Sandra, an orangutan, basic human rights. This case has gained prominence because of the many benefits it could bring to other animals. Chimpanzees, gorillas, elephants, and other apes deserve to be treated in a humane manner. These animals are extremely intelligent and need to be placed in an environment that provides for their social and mental needs.

I hope Argentina will vote in favor of other motions that will grant animals more rights. I know your country is setting an example for other countries, and I hope they will take notice. Animals suffer greatly because they are deemed creatures with little to no intelligence. Science has found out that this is not the case. Argentina has proven to the world that there is compassion for our animals and I hope other nations will follow suit. Thank you for your kindness to animals.
