Target: U.S. President Barack Obama
Goal: Prevent ICE from harassing transgendered individuals
President Barack Obama’s recent executive action on immigration largely excluded people from the LGBT community, as it benefited people with biological children living in the United States or those with heterosexual romantic relationships. One-in-five reports of sexual abuse in ICE custody which are substantiated are against trans women being held in ICE facilities. Many LGBT individuals give up claims of asylum and accept deportation because of the terrible conditions they are subjected to. Trans women, in particular, who come to America seeking refuge from violence and assault in their home countries, face homophobia, transphobia, and violence while in custody.
Isa Novola, Program Manager for Transgender Law Center, stated that “the realities that my community faces daily around various forms of violence are constant. ICE is holding trans immigrants under violent conditions and is exposing them to more trauma the longer they keep them. Releasing my community from detention is only the first step towards our collective liberation. President Obama could easily stop these terrible abuses at the hands of the federal government by directing DHS to classify LGBTQ immigrants as too vulnerable to detain.”
Trans women are being held in all-male detention centers or subjected to the torture of solitary confinement in ICE facilities. There is a precedent of not utilizing resources to detain at-risk populations and, as the LGBT population has been recognized as such by DHS, these individuals should not be held in ICE dentition centers. Sign the petition below to urge President Obama to prevent the detention and inhumane treatment of LGBT individuals in ICE custody.
Dear President Obama,
You recently announced immigration reform that benefits many individuals who have come to the United States seeking a better life and pursing the American dream. However, this reform did not do enough to include LGBT individuals who are disproportionately affected by violence and trauma in ICE detention centers. These facilities have repeatedly failed to provide for the safety of trans individuals in their custody.
I implore you to extend similar measures as those put in place recently for other immigrants, and provide temporary relief to the LGBT communities. It is within your authority to demand that DHS stop detaining LGBT people because of the risks of violence and persecution they face.
You have proved your support for LGBT communities in the past; please continue to do so by preventing the detention and inhumane treatment of LGBT individuals in ICE custody. This population is disproportionately affected by mistreatment and needs your help.
