Target: Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General
Goal: Applaud decision to include transgender status in anti-discrimination law
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced that transgender individuals will now be protected under anti-discrimination laws. The Justice Department did not consider discrimination against transgender people to be prohibited discrimination on the basis of gender identity until now, so this is an important step for protecting trans individuals from discrimination. Please join us in letting Eric Holder know that he made the right decision.
Transgender people tend to face a lot of discrimination in many areas of their lives, and discrimination in the workplace can have particularly harsh consequences. Research shows that trans people are at least twice more likely to be unemployed than cisgender people, and four times more likely to have a household income of less than $10,000. Discrimination in the workplace makes it incredibly difficult for trans individuals to make a living, and when there is no legal protection, there are very few options available for them.
This decision can help many trans individuals to get the rights they deserve and to be able to support themselves and their families. There are still a lot of other issues to be tackled, but this is an important step in the right direction. Please let the Attorney General know that you support this decision and encourage him to keep expanding the legal protections for transgender people.
Dear Mr. Attorney General,
I am writing to you regarding your recent announcement that the Justice Department will finally protect transgender individuals under Title VII. Until now, discrimination against transgender people did not fall under the Justice Department’s definition of sex and gender-based discrimination. This made anti-trans discrimination at the workplace extremely common and contributed to the many financial and social challenges that trans people face. I hope that this decision can offer transgender people the protection they deserve.
I would like to thank you for this decision, which will help many trans people to make a living with dignity and respect. I also encourage you to further expand the legal protections available to LGBTQ individuals, and particularly trans people, who face a disproportionate amount of discrimination in the workplace.
