Target: Director of the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Daniel M. Ashe
Goal: List the Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly as an endangered species
The Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly is a rare species found in only one place in the world. With all of its population limited to a six-square-foot area in New Mexico, the slightest disruption of its environment can be deadly for the species. Despite its dire situation, the checkerspot butterfly is still not listed as an endangered species and, in consequence, is not protected enough to guarantee its survival.
The delicate checkerspot butterfly depends on a single host plant – the New Mexico penstemon – to lay its eggs on. If the checkerspot butterfly and the New Mexico penstemon miss each other, whether by climate, physical distance, or other external factors, the butterfly would not be able to lay its eggs and the species would cease to exist.
A conservationist group called the WildEarth Guardians have been working to get the checkerspot butterfly protected by the Endangered Species Act since the late 1990s. However, all its efforts have been denied by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. More support and action is needed to help the Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly get listed as an endangered species so that this rare butterfly’s survival can be ensured.
By signing the petition below, you will give protection to the checkerspot butterfly by urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list it under the Endangered Species Act.
Dear Director Ashe,
The Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly is a rare species with a dwindling chance of survival. Not only is the butterfly found in only one place in the world but it also depends on a single plant species for reproduction. If the climate shifts or other outside factors disrupt the butterfly or its host plant, the results could be devastating.
The WildEarth Guardians have seen the importance of taking action to protect this beautiful species. However, all of its efforts have been denied. I write now to support the WildEarth Guardians in its efforts to protect the checkerspot butterfly and urge you to rethink your previous decisions.
By listing the butterfly under the Endangered Species Act, more can be done to ensure the survival of this rare species. The situation is too temperamental to risk, and if your organization takes too long to help this butterfly, the opportunity to save it could be lost. Please take immediate action to protect this species from extinction.
