Target: Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America
Goal: Demand a prominent pro-gun activist apologize to a congresswoman for his misogynistic and violent remarks
Prominent pro-gun activist Larry Pratt has been on a crusade against Representative Carolyn Maloney after she got rightfully upset with Pratt for advocating gun violence against her. His remarks continue to be dangerous and tinged with blatant misogyny. Demand that Pratt end his crusade against Representative Maloney at once.
Larry Pratt, the executive director for the organization Gun Owners of America, has been targeting Representative Carolyn Maloney for a while now. After Representative Maloney contacted Capitol Police over a threat that a member of Gun Owners of America made against her, the organization called her “foolish.” Pratt himself went on to encourage the threat by saying that elected officials should always live in fear of citizens “turning to the cartridge box” against them, because that “is what the Second Amendment is all about.” After the Capitol Police investigated and thankfully found no credible threat, Pratt piled on a condescending, misogynistic attitude to his already offensive remarks, saying that Representative Maloney “went off on a hissy fit” about the potential threat, and said “You’re nuts, lady, shut up.”
Pratt’s comments are out of line on many different levels, and he has not backed down from any of them. Sign the petition below to let him know that his remarks are horrible and demand that he end them at once.
Dear Executive Director Pratt,
I am writing you today about your history of commentary regarding Representative Carolyn Maloney. Your remarks, from start to finish, have been out of line and offensive.
Your comments encouraging violence against Representative Maloney, that sparked this whole exchange, are grounds enough for condemnation. But you didn’t stop there. Mocking a congresswoman for pursuing an investigation on threats to her life is ridiculous, and elevating those threats to the level of a vital political process–even suggesting that such threats against elected officials should happen more often–is downright dangerous. Your most recent remarks, where you condescendingly and paternalistically claimed that Representative Maloney “had a hissy fit” over the threat, reek of sexism and misogyny. Perhaps you still live in the 1950s, but such comments are entirely inappropriate in our day and age.
Your continued reliance on your conflict with Representative Maloney in pursuing the interests of your organization makes it look like you are on an out-and-out crusade against her. I demand that you end this campaign at once by issuing a public apology towards her for your condescending and violence-endorsing attitude, and stopping such commentary once and for all.
