Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Applaud President Obama’s decision to permanently protect Alaska’s Bristol Bay from oil and gas development
Alaska’s pristine Bristol Bay has been off-limits to oil and natural gas leasing since 2010 under a temporary protection arrangement set to expire in 2017. However, on Tuesday President Obama officially withdrew the 52,234-square-mile area from resource exploration indefinitely. Praise Obama’s bold decision to preserve this beautiful natural resource from profit-hungry corporations.
“Bristol Bay has supported Native Americans in the Alaska region for centuries. It supports $2 billion in the commercial fishing industry. It supplies America with 40% of its wild-caught seafood. It is a natural wonder, and it’s something that’s just too precious to be putting out to the highest bidder,” the president said of his decision.
The announcement comes as a welcome relief to people all over Alaska despite the protests of the oil and gas industries. Those who stand to profit from the exploitation of Alaska’s resources at the expense of the planet threaten economic doom, but people are too smart to fall for their scare tactics any longer.
Tell President Obama that he made the right choice by putting the well being of our planet over the short-term interests of oil executives.
Dear President Obama,
Alaska’s Bristol Bay is a natural treasure, one which must be vigilantly defended. Though oil and gas companies dream about the short-term profits to be had by exploiting the reserves of fossil fuels off of Alaska’s coast, there is much more at stake than the financial interests of these corporations. As reported by Alaskan Senator Mark Begich, “federal officials estimate the net value of Bristol Bay’s oil and gas resources at $7.7 billion. But the fishery is worth $2 billion annually, or $80 billion over the life span of the fossil fuel deposit.”
The waters and shoreline of Bristol Bay are integral to the way of life of many people in southern Alaska. Not only is Bristol Bay an important source of livelihood for the people of Alaska, it is also a pristine environment in sore need of protection against those who wish to plunder it.
Therefore we, the undersigned, applaud your decision to close the waters of Bristol Bay to oil and gas exploration. The short-term economic boon enjoyed by a select group in the energy industry would come at a tremendous cost, one which the people of Alaska, as well as people all over the world would be forced to shoulder. The coasts of Alaska are not to be bought and sold at the whim of corporate executives; rather they are to be preserved and protected as a legacy for future generations.
