Success: New York State Bans Fracking

Fracking job in progress

Target: Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo

Goal: Applaud Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to permanently ban hydraulic fracturing in New York

Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” has come under fire in recent years because of the detrimental consequences it has on our health. Fracking involves drilling underground to harvest oil and gas, but it pollutes our soil and groundwater. The issue has been heavily opposed by environmentalists, and now citizens are joining the fight. ForceChange published several petitions on this issue. The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, recently announced that fracking would be permanently banned in the state for its atrocious health risks. Applaud the state for this victory by signing this petition.

Fracking involves the use of water and dozens of unknown chemicals. These chemicals are dispersed through the ground, where they ruin the soil and the groundwater. Citizens who live near fracking sites have reported temporary to long-lasting ailments resulting from these operations. Rashes, headaches, permanent damage to the nervous system, and flammable water are all side effects of living near a fracking site. Governor Cuomo even stated in The Wall Street Journal that he would never want his kids to live near such a site.

For years the citizens of New York have pushed for the state to ban fracking. Other countries, namely those in Europe, have already banned hydraulic fracking on a nationwide level, but the United States continues to allow it. The health of our environment and drinking water should be our priorities, not our economy. If crops cannot be grown and water cannot be drunk, all living species on the planet will be doomed. Sign this petition and thank Governor Andrew Cuomo for his decision.

Dear Governor Andrew Cuomo,

Recently you announced a permanent moratorium on hydraulic fracking in the state of New York, sending environmentalists into a frenzy of joy. For years the citizens of New York have fought for this ban because they are concerned for their well-being. I am grateful that you’ve listened to their concerns and I applaud you for this action.

I understand that you are receiving backlash for this motion, as many would have liked to see the economy in New York grow. However, I need to stress the importance of clean drinking water and healthy soil. Humans and other animals depend on clean water and soil to survive. If either of these resources are polluted, our entire ecosystem is doomed. Please keep this in consideration when dealing with opponents of this ban. Our environment is a precious thing.

  1. It’s about time somebody finally had some sense and paid attention to this serious issue.

  2. Thank you so very much for your caring decisions which you have taken towards to stop this fracking, madness. People are so overwhelmingly greedy for the money & fame it has become almost a plague that keeps spreading among the greedy people. They don’t care about another’s lives, health issues, consequences, outcomes etc. It’s only money …nothing but money. So pathetic.

  3. not in sleepy hollow, ny!
