Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Support protecting endangered species and a valuable ecosystem from oil drilling
Bristol Bay is known for its pristine and harsh beauty. The bay is home to wild salmon, bears, elk, and other animals that have adapted to live in this brutal and frigid climate. Native Americans have also called this place home. Unfortunately, this beautiful landscape has come under threat from oil and gas companies, who wish to exploit the land for its resources. President Barack Obama recently announced that he is protecting Bristol Bay from such prospects because these environments are far too precious for us to ruin. Sign this petition and praise the president for thinking about the welfare of our waters.
Bristol Bay has received attention because oil and gas companies believe that this landscape holds profitable resources. Pebble mining companies have also sought permission to explore Bristol Bay for metals. However all of these operations will have consequences on the environment. Oil and gas spills will devastate the bay’s waters, pollute the environment, and make it difficult for animals to survive. Fortunately, President Obama realizes how precious Bristol Bay is and has protected it and surrounding waters from oil and gas exploration.
Bristol Bay has a $2 billion commercial fishing economy, providing 40 percent of wild salmon to America. The sockeye salmon in particular hails from these waters. It is not just fish that call this bay home. This landscape is home to threatened species such as the Stellar’s elder, sea otters, seals, walruses, beluga and killer whales, and the North Pacific Right Whale. If these lands were excavated for oil and gas, these species would undoubtedly suffer.
The fishing industry has responded positively to President Obama’s decision to protect Bristol Bay and surrounding waters. Environmentalists are also praising his action. President Obama has displayed a deep appreciation for our planet and you can praise his action by signing this petition.
Dear President Barack Obama,
Recently you withdrew Bristol Bay and surrounding waters from oil and gas exploration, thereby permanently protecting the bay. It brings me great joy to know that you appreciate the environment and the wonderful creatures that depend on it. I am grateful that you’ve listened to the concerns of environmentalists and animal activists, and I would like to praise you for your efforts.
I hope you will continue to offer protection to other critical and endangered sites in America. Unfortunately, oil and gas operations are not the only things negatively impacting our landscapes. Pebble and coal mines are other threats, and I urge you to keep an eye on such operations. Please be vigilant and keep our planet clean.
