Target: Michael Brian Vanderboegh, co-founder of the Three Percenters
Goal: Urge pro-gun radical to rescind comments advocating gun violence against the government and innocent citizens
A rally against gun control laws was recently held in Olympia, Washington. Among the speakers at the event was a prominent member of the anti-gun control bloc, who said to a crowd of a few hundred likeminded individuals that supporters of gun control are enemies of the state and may need to be combated with gun violence. Demand that Michael Brian Vanderboegh apologize for and rescind such dangerous remarks.
Vanderboegh, a prominent anti-gun control advocate, spoke recently at a rally in Olympia, Washington against a new Washington law that requires background checks on almost all gun purchases. Speaking to the crowd, Vanderboegh called the majority of Washington citizens who voted for the ballot initiative in the recent elections “domestic enemies of the Constitution,” and said that “Second Amendments remedies” should be on the table in light of the initiative becoming law. These remarks come after an extensive history of equally dangerous rhetoric, rhetoric alarming enough people that the Southern Poverty Law Center has labelled the man an extremist and maintains a thorough profile of his political history.
It is rhetoric like this that has given President Obama the infamous historical title of the president with the most threats against his life, and that has created an unprecedented increase in domestic right-wing militia groups. Sign the petition below to demand that Vanderboegh publicly rescind his comments and apologize for ever making them.
Dear Mr. Vanderboegh,
I am writing you today about the speech you gave at a recent rally against the successful Washington Universal Background Checks for Gun Purchases Initiative 594 in Olympia, Washington. No doubt some of your remarks were intended to stir up controversy, but the possible consequences of them go far beyond that.
You accused people who voted for the initiative of being enemies of the state and went so far as to advocate gun violence against them. The United States has already seen a huge spike in the activity of right-wing domestic militia groups in the years since President Obama was elected; groups that many consider to be terrorist organizations, and that take remarks like yours as justification for their actions against left-wing or centrist policies that go against their ideologies. Your inflammatory rhetoric gives them justification for their violent actions. It also encourages potential lone wolves to engage in acts of politically motivated violence, lone wolves who any expert will tell you are much more dangerous and likely to act than these more engrained militia groups.
No one knows who might have heard what you said, and who plans to act on that call to arms by killing innocents. Saying what you said was irresponsible and dangerous. I urge you to do what you can to amend the situation by publicly rescinding your statements and apologizing for making them in the first place. Hopefully that will be enough to halt any violence that your comments inspired.
