Target: Larry Esquivel, San Jose Police Chief
Goal: Call for immediate dismissal of officer who threatened to kill local protesters
In response to the recent protests over the killings of unarmed black men by white police officers, one white police officer has made several bigoted and threatening remarks aimed at protesters. The comments, which came by way of Officer Phil White’s Twitter account, have already been deleted but their message is clearly a part of this officer’s world view. Some of the proper steps for this situation have already been taken, but this officer must be relieved of his duty and firearm as soon as possible to ensure the safety of the community at large.
The protests over the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of white police officers are continuing to be met with aggression and violence from police. On his Twitter account, Officer White said: “Threaten me or my family and I will use my God-given and law-appointed right and duty to kill you.” He went on to say that he would be at a local movie theater, with his gun, if any protester “feels they can’t breathe or their lives matter.” This kind of talk from someone who is supposed to be protecting people is unacceptable.
Menlo college, a local school where Officer White coached basketball, has distanced themselves from him, his police union has condemned him, and he has been placed on suspension by his chief. These are all positive steps toward a resolution to this situation, but more action is required. Officer White must be relieved of his duty immediately and be forced to give up his firearm. This man’s feelings on equality and freedom of speech are clear and he must not be allowed to dispense his vigilante justice. He is not judge, jury, and executioner and he must be stopped. Please sign below to remove this man from power.
Dear Police Chief Esquivel,
One of your officers recently threatened the lives and safety of protesters on social media. I know that you are aware of this because you have taken some of the necessary steps to remedy this situation. However, I believe that you have not gone far enough. Officer White’s opinions and sense of justice have been made clear by his social media posts and I write to you to ask that he be relieved of his duty and his firearm be taken from him immediately.
It’s terrifying to know that this man is bringing a firearm to the movies when he is off-duty after saying that he has a God-given right to kill people. He may not be a bad person, but he is not fit to be a police officer. His job, and yours, is to protect people, not threaten them. For this reason, I urge you to dismiss Officer White as soon as possible.
