Target: San Jose Chief of Police Larry Esquivel
Goal: Fire police officer who threatened to kill police brutality protesters over Twitter
A police officer was caught sending out disturbing and violent tweets talking about how he would kill people who disagreed with him. Buzzfeed found two posts on the officer’s Twitter account, one which said “Threaten me or my family and I will use my God given and law appointed right and duty to kill you. #CopsLivesMatter” and the other which said, “By the way if anyone feels they can’t breathe or their lives matter I’ll be at the movies tonight, off duty, carrying my gun.”
Police officers are supposed to be peacekeepers. They’re supposed to serve and protect, not threaten to kill protesters over the Internet. This kind of behavior in light of the multitude of exposed police brutality cases is absolutely unacceptable for any officer of the law. It’s attitudes like this that are getting so many young people of color killed via deadly, unnecessary force. Clearly, anyone who would think it’s appropriate to say things like this on a public social media account is not fit for duty.
By signing this petition, you’ll urge the San Jose Police Department to immediately dismiss Officer Phillip White from the force. As long as young people are dying for no reason in massive numbers at the hands of violent cops, it’s imperative that we refuse to tolerate behavior like this and root out any police officers who are displaying these kinds of attitudes.
Dear Chief Esquivel,
One of your officers, an Officer Phillip White, was caught posting some threatening and violent statements on his Twitter account. He said that he would kill people who threatened his family because it was his “law-appointed” right, and then implied that he would shoot anyone who felt like “they can’t breathe or their lives matter.” As these statements apply to black people, it’s easy to assume that he means that he wants to shoot black individuals.
Are these the kind of people you want enforcing the law under your watch? It’s already clear that police departments across the country have a serious problem with racist and overly violent officers. Innocent, unarmed people–particularly people of color–across the U.S. are killed far too often by cops who are never held accountable. It is unacceptable for police officers to be going onto public social media accounts to talk about how eager they are to shoot people.
I want you to immediately dismiss Officer White from your department. He is clearly unfit for duty if he’s willing to publicly express a desire to shoot black individuals, on or off duty. Someone like this is likely to bring shame upon you and the entire San Jose department by using unnecessary force, which may end up being deadly. Please fire White before that happens.
