Target: Salem Police Department Prosecutor, Jake Kamins
Goal: Support the sentencing of a neglectful alpaca ranch owner
The owner of an alpaca ranch holding over 200 animals is being convicted for animal abuse and neglect. The county jury in Oregon gave the guilty verdict of two felonies and over 15 misdemeanor charges of animal abuse to the ranch owner. Thank authorities for seeking justice for the abused alpacas.
Authorities and veterinarians came on the scene of Jocelyn’s Alpaca Ranch after neighbors complained about the awful conditions they witnessed. The team discovered close to 60 dead alpacas and veterinarians had to move almost 200 underfed and malnourished alpacas to emergency animal care units.
Robert Silver used an inheritance to start up an alpaca ranch after his wife, Jocelyn Silver, asked him for it. Unfortunately, after purchasing this ranch, the market for alpacas went downhill. The Silver’s soon began to neglect their ranch and their animals. Jocelyn has previously pleaded guilty to neglect charges and was penalized with three years of probation.
Thankfully, there was an abundance of adoption offers once the story became public. More witnesses also came forward after hearing about the conviction. Many of the alpacas were able to gain enough strength back after being cared for by the veterinarians.
Since the couple’s convictions, the veterinarians helped 150 alpacas find loving owners. Please sign this petition to support the sentencing of these careless and neglectful alpaca owners.
Dear Officer Jake Kamins,
It is troubling to witness careless human beings buy an entire ranch of animals and choose to neglect the animals because they cannot make a profit on them. It is sad news when authorities are forced to come in and rescue hundreds of malnourished and deprived animals. This horrible situation occurred when you visited Jocelyn’s Alpaca Ranch. In 2013, veterinarians found 50 dead alpacas on the property and police located almost 200 abused alpacas. It is clear that these owners were never fit to take on the responsibilities of these animals.
You saw the conditions of the alpacas firsthand and prosecuted the owner to the fullest extent of the law. Treating a large number of animals this way is cruel. It is good to see that penalties for animal abuse are raised to felony status and offenders are convicted for their crimes. Thank you for convicting Robert Silver for his negligence regarding his alpaca ranch.
