Target: Belankazar Academy Director, Alexander Velasquez
Goal: Stop pushing dangerous procedures on young girls so they can achieve beauty pageant standards
In Venezuela, girls as young as age 12 are undergoing plastic surgery and other extreme beauty procedures for a chance to become beauty queens. Venezuela is known for having many beauty queens win the title of Miss World and as a result, beauty schools are striving to produce the best-looking girls they can.
The Belankazar academy in Caracas, Venezuela is one of the oldest beauty schools in Venezuela and houses around 600 girls that are ages 5-29. The current Miss Venezuela was one of its pupils, which adds to the prestige of the school. Middle and lower-class families will do just about anything to put their young children in this school, even permitting their children to drop out of school. This is sad considering that the parents are responsible for encouraging their children to do anything it takes for beauty.
Once they are in the school, many of the girls will get breast implants at age 16. Girls that aren’t able to lose weight have been known to have their small intestine surgically altered so that food cannot be digested, while others have a plastic mesh sewn onto their tongue so that eating solid food becomes incredibly difficult for them. It has been reported that one of the girls, aged nine, is undergoing hormone injections to delay puberty and therefore grow taller than she normally would.
The damage done to these girls mentally and physically is abhorrent and the push to achieve beauty pageant standards is dangerous. I understand that Venezuela is proud to have so many successful beauty queens, but this has gone too far. Please sign the petition to tell Belankazar academy to stop allowing young girls to be pushed into extreme beauty procedures.
Dear Mr. Velasquez,
Young girls are very impressionable and look to their role models as to how they should look and behave. When beauty schools such as yours have a prestigious reputation, parents will force their children into these schools for a chance to become a beauty queen. This is problematic in that your school has begun allowing and encouraging young girls to undergo dramatic procedures in order to achieve unrealistic beauty standards.
Having mesh plastic sewn onto a young girl’s tongue so that she cannot eat solid foods is horrifying, along with having surgery on their small intestines so that food doesn’t digest. When we teach young girls that it is perfectly fine to get breast implants at age 16, we are clearly doing something wrong.
We should be embracing all body types and promoting bodies of all shapes and sizes. Beauty pageant schools are reinforcing the goal to achieve unrealistic beauty standards and saying that it is okay to do whatever it takes to get this body. Please stop pushing and encouraging these young girls to undergo these dangerous procedures in the name of beauty.
