Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Prosecute CIA officials that tortured detainees in the United States
Torture was used by CIA officials during the George W. Bush administration to acquire intelligence from terrorists and other criminals. These detainees experienced a plethora of abuse at the hands of these officials, many of which went unnoticed by the President and other political figures. Torture is banned by international treaties and is regarded as one of the gravest human rights violations. Urge President Barack Obama to prosecute the CIA officials responsible for violating human rights and torturing the detainees.
The United States Senate recently released a report detailing torture methods used by the CIA, methods that were kept secret from President Bush and the Secretary of State at the time. These acts included waterboarding, sleep deprivation, nudity, dietary manipulation, exposure to cold temperatures, and placing detainees in stress positions. One detainee, Abu Zubaydah, almost died as a result of waterboarding. At one point the man was “unresponsive” and bubbles could be seen rising out of his mouth. It was only through medical intervention that he was revived. Unfortunately, one detainee died from hypothermia.
At least five detainees were subjected to rectal feeding, where food was pureed and shoved into the detainees’ rectums. Others were deprived of sleep for 180 hours. CIA officials also forced handcuffed and nude victims to walk up and down the hallways with their hands up for extended periods of time as officials repeatedly slapped and harassed them. The report also noted that whatever information was gathered from the detainees, none of it was useful in the search for those responsible for 9/11.
The United Nations Convention Against Torture is an international treaty that the United States signed. Countries who sign these treaties are obligated to stop the use of torture, and cannot transport criminals into countries where there is a high likelihood that torture would be used. The United States is obligated to prosecute the CIA officials involved in torturing and killing detainees, as these officials violated several human rights. Sign this petition and urge President Obama to begin the investigation against these government officials.
Dear President Obama,
The recent release of a torture report has shocked and appalled the world. The report, which details the use of torture by CIA authorities on detainees, has stunned human rights organizations and politicians. Torture is banned under international treaty, and as a country that supports human rights, this is utterly disgraceful.
I am writing this letter urging you to prosecute the CIA officials who were involved in these cases. While 9/11 is an event that affected everyone in the United States, it does not justify the use of torture on any human being. Their methods did not garner the nation any important information, and all it does is sow fear and frustration among the world.
