Don’t Use Religion as Excuse to Discriminate

Anti-Gay Protesters

Target: Michigan Governor Rick Snyder

Goal: Do not allow Michigan businesses to legally discriminate against LGBTQ persons

The Michigan House of Representatives has passed a discriminatory bill that would legally allow just about anybody to refuse service to LGBTQ persons based on their religious beliefs. This includes emergency medical technicians, meaning that dying LGBTQ patients could legally be left to die because of an EMT’s personal views. This is a bill that could literally lead to the unnecessary deaths of an already at-risk group of people.

It’s bad enough that conservative politicians are attempting to pass bills that would allow people to refuse LGBTQ persons service at a shop or restaurant. The new bill takes this bigotry to a new level of extremism by including medical professionals, pharmacists, and other people who provide life-saving services. There is no doubt that this bill comes from a place of intense hatred and prejudice when it would put the lives of innocent people at risk just for the sake of “religious freedom.” No one’s religious freedom is more important than another’s right to live.

The bill is now on its way to the Michigan Senate. By signing this petition, you’ll urge Governor Rick Snyder to veto the bill should it pass in the Senate as well. If Republicans like Snyder really believe in the sanctity of life, then they cannot in good faith support a bill that would allow doctors to leave people in emergency health situations to die. This bill is literally a life-and-death issue, and it must be stopped at all costs.

Dear Governor Snyder,

As you know, the Michigan House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow people of all kinds of professions to refuse service to LGBTQ individuals based on their personal religious beliefs. You should also be aware that this bill includes services such as emergency medical technicians and pharmacists, meaning that it would allow people who provide life-saving services to refuse to help dying patients. An EMT could literally let a LBGTQ person die because he or she thinks that God wants them to die.

This is absolutely unacceptable. No one should ever have to live with the knowledge that they could be left to die simply because of who they are. It’s bad enough that the bill would legalize active discrimination against LGBTQ persons, but there is absolutely no excuse imaginable for allowing a bill that could cost people their lives to be put into law.

I urge you to veto this bill if it also passes the Michigan Senate. Regardless of your religious views, you must understand that no decent society would ever make it legal to leave somebody to die just because one member doesn’t approve of the way someone else loves. At that point, you’re giving people a license to kill based on any belief that they could declare as religious in nature. Don’t let LGBTQ people die for the sake of a misguided notion of religious freedom.
