Target: Angela Box, former teacher for Texas’ Houston Independent School District
Goal: Thank racist woman for removing herself from her teaching position
An elementary school teacher in Texas recently came into the national spotlight after racist comments she made were picked up by media outlets. Following widespread condemnation, she was forced to resign from her position. Applaud the former schoolteacher for removing herself from her position of influence over children.
Angela Box, a teacher working for a Houston, Texas school district, recently said a number of horribly racist things about Muslims, President Obama, and Mexicans on a cable access conservative talk show she co-hosts on her off-time. After her remarks gained local and national attention, she refused to apologize, instead playing into the right-wing narrative that she was just fighting the good fight and speaking truth to left-wing, liberal, political-correctness-run-amok power. Obviously, concerns were raised about what business a person of such racist views had teaching children. Fortunately, due to the outcry Box’s comments raised around the country, including the passionate voices of those here at ForceChange who would not abide such bigotry, Box was pressured into resigning from her teaching position once and for all.
Every generation has the obligation to make the world a more just place than their parents left it. Clearly that cannot be achieved if the people teaching the next generation possess views that should be more fit for the history books than they should be for the 21st century. Sign the petition below to express your gratitude to Box for doing the right thing and leaving her teaching position behind.
Dear Ms. Box,
I am writing you today about your recent decision to step down from your teaching position with the Houston Independent School District. I commend you for your willingness to take action and resign from your job in response to the widespread criticism you have received for your racist comments about Muslims, President Obama, and Mexicans.
Just recently, a 15-year-old Muslim child, Abdisamad Sheikh-Hussein, was killed in Kansas City in an anti-Muslim hate crime. His murder is indicative of the culture of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim violence that has escalated to unprecedented levels in our country since September 11, 2001. Willingly or not, your comments served only to foster, encourage, and perpetuate the culture of bigotry and fear against Muslims that led to Abdisamad’s murder. I hope you recognize the gravity of matters this community is dealing with. It is not a joke. The anti-Muslim culture you take part in has consequences.
Bearing this in mind, I encourage you take this opportunity and use your resignation as merely a starting point for making amends. Publicly apologizing for your comments, for instance, couldn’t hurt. Combatting cultures of violence and oppression should be the responsibility of everyone–in your case, your resignation should be just a jumping-off point.
