Target: Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison
Goal: Provide aid and medical treatment to asylum seekers
Australians are concerned with Minister of Immigration Scott Morrison for crafting laws that target asylum seekers in a cruel and inhumane way. International law states that all countries must accept refugees that are fleeing from prosecution. Instead, Australia seeks to rid itself of these refugees, or treat them as subhumans. The Ministry of Immigration in particular has begun to target children, separating the young ones from their families. These unethical amendments must be torn down. Tell Minister of Immigration Scott Morrison to propose a new amendment where all asylum seekers are treated with dignity, are held in centers that are sanitary, and provide proper medical care.
The United Nations Refugee Convention was created after the world say the horrors of Nazi concentration camp. Countries that sign this convention are obligated to provide assistance and medical care to fleeing refugees. Australia did sign this treaty, and has become a sanctuary for many asylum seekers. However, instead of providing aid, Australia is pushing refugees away and treating them as subhumans.
If refugees survive the voyage at sea, they are often crammed into Australia’s detention centers, either at Nauru or Manus Island. One refugee was killed by the staff running the centers, and two guards were charged with murder. Another refugee died of septicaemia when he injured his foot. These incidents highlight with Australia’s immigration procedures. The country is ill equipped, and does not wish to provide aid to asylum seekers. If you believe that these immigration practices are out of line, sign this petition and urge Minister Morrison to propose a new amendment that respects the rights of asylum seekers.
Dear Minister of Immigration Scott Morrison,
Your newest immigration law passed in Australia’s senate, thereby removing critical protections for asylum seekers. Boat people are refugees who are fleeing their home country due to prosecution or a conflict. These people are fleeing for their lives, and are looking to Australia for aid. Other countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia are not privy to the refugee convention, and thus cannot provide aid. This amendment shirks your country’s duty, and instead places refugees in a treacherous position.
Children should not be torn from their families, and yet this amendment gives your ministry power to do this. Refugees need to stay together, as this is a critical and dangerous point in their lives. As Australia has signed the refugee convention, it is your country’s responsibility to provide aid, support, and medical care to refugees in need. Please craft a new amendment that provides for these measures.
