Target: Albuquerque Mayor, R. J. Berry
Goal: Thank mayor for installing security cameras to protect the animals at a New Mexico zoo
After speculation that someone intentionally killed Jasper, a Tasmanian devil at Albuquerque’s BioPark Zoo, the city has taking extra steps to protect the zoo’s animals by increasing the facility’s security equipment. The mayor of Albuquerque has agreed to install extra cameras after a recent petition called for more security at the zoo. The zookeepers stress that protecting the animals is their first priority.
After Jasper’s death, the three remaining Tasmanian devils have been under the employees’ watchful eyes at all times. The zookeepers are in the process of installing the cables needed to run up to 15 security cameras throughout the zoo. The zoo is currently working on putting cameras near their most popular attractions and animals because they garner the largest crowds. The cameras will be placed throughout the exhibits where they can capture the animals’ every move. The city gave the zoo a substantial fund to install the equipment and is also requiring all of the staff to go through ethics training.
Jasper was found dead in its exhibit after an unknown person threw a piece of asphalt at its head. Investigators are still looking into whether or not Jasper’s death was an accident. Reports show that the Tasmanian devil had visible trauma to its head. Prosecutors believe that it was an act of hatred and not an accident, but nobody knows for sure.
Please sign this petition to thank the city of Albuquerque and the BioPark Zoo for taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of its animals.
Dear Mayor Berry,
The Albuquerque BioPark Zoo was hit with a huge tragedy in October 2014 when a Tasmanian devil was hit by a piece of asphalt and died. The investigators are not sure whether the head trauma was accidental or purposeful. Either way, it was a tragic loss for the zoo. The incident brought the zoo’s security into question, and the zookeepers debated how to prevent something like this from happening again.
Thank you for funding the new security cameras at the zoo. With your help, the zookeepers can keep a closer eye on all of the animal exhibits. Thank you for also providing the zookeepers with ethics trainings so that they will think twice before harming an animal within their care.
