Target: Representative Peter King (R-NY)
Goal: Demand retraction and full apology for despicable comments about man who was choked to death by police
In a truly saddening interview, a State Representative from New York blamed a man’s death on his weight and not the police officers who continued to choke him as he gasped, “I can’t breathe.” The representative claims that the reason this man, named Eric Garner, passed away was that he was “so obese” and that the officers involved are not at fault because they could not have known he had prior health issues. This defense of police brutality and murder is shocking and must be condemned in order to get a full retraction and apology.
Eric Garner was murdered by police as he stood on the street in New York City. Several police officers tackled him to the ground while one put him in a choke hold that the police department does not even allow. The officer proceeded to choke him to death as he gasped and begged them to stop. The entire altercation was filmed with a cellphone by a person standing nearby. Despite video evidence of murder, the officer in question was not charged with any crime and is being allowed to retain his position. This is a depressing outcome in its own right, but Representative King’s comments are just truly inhuman.
To claim that this was the victim’s fault in any way is vile and only serves to defend white police officers who take black lives without a second thought. Representative King also went on to say, “if you can’t breathe, you can’t speak,” but clearly Eric Garner could not breathe because he actually died. The fact that he could not breathe is not open to questioning. Please sign below to condemn this vile excuse for a human being and demand a full retraction of his comments with a full apology to the memory of Eric Garner and all who he has hurt.
Dear Representative King,
I am writing to you today because I am truly disgusted with your comments regarding the death of Eric Garner and your attempts to defend police brutality by white police officers against black men. Arguing that his murder was due to his weight and not to the police officers needlessly choking the life out of him is false and does more than deeply sadden me, it reinforces the idea that police brutality is acceptable and necessary.
Your second comment that if you are unable to breathe you are also unable to speak is just false in every way. Clearly Eric Garner was not faking his asphyxiation as he is actually dead. Your callousness and lack of human decency on this issue are astounding. Murder is murder, Representative King; it doesn’t matter if the killer is a police officer or a regular person. I demand that you retract these hurtful and upsetting comments, and issue a full apology to the memory of Eric Garner and all people that you have hurt with your cruel words.
