Goal: Applaud renewable energy company for opening world’s largest solar farm
The world’s largest solar farm has just been opened by a large renewable energy company in California. The farm is capable of generating energy sufficient to power over 160,000 homes, with nine million solar panels, and takes up only nine otherwise useless square miles of land. MidAmerican Renewables estimates that this technological marvel will displace 377,000 tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of taking 77,000 cars off the road. This is a fantastic step toward a completely renewable and greener future that must be commended and encouraged.
Geologists and economists put the lifespan of our current fossil fuel consuming society at about 35 years. In contrast to this, solar is the king among renewable energy sources because it is essentially inexhaustible. Solar energy causes no pollution in the actual collection of energy and very little in the manufacturing of solar panels. This farm was also built on land that has little natural wildlife and cannot be used to farm a meaningful amount of any crop.
The cost of this project is also cause for celebration as well. The entire farm, named “Project Topaz,” cost only $2.5 billion to manufacture and build. While that sounds like a lot of money to the average person, compared to the United States’ GDP, it’s pennies. The government could build hundreds of these plants and start saving the climate faster than any other country on earth.
Fossil fuels are running out quickly and renewable energy is assuredly the future. Please sign the petition below to show your support for farms like Project Topaz and to urge the U.S. government to get off the fossil fuel treadmill.
Dear Mr. Fehrmen,
I am writing today to commend you on opening the world’s largest solar farm in California. Solar energy is one of the world’s best hopes for a completely renewable future and your company’s farm is the first step toward this reality. While other companies are trying to eke out every last drop of petroleum from our earth, your commitment to a sustainable future is both refreshing and commendable.
“Project Topaz” is a stunning achievement of science, development, and planning. Generating 550 megawatts to power over 160,000 homes is a major accomplishment and does a great deal for our planet at the same time. Removing 377,000 tons of CO2 from our atmosphere will lower pollution levels and provide a safer environment for both humans and animals alike.
Once again, I want to thank you for your work and urge you to continue it in the future. Our planet needs more companies like MidAmerican and more solar farms like Project Topaz.
