Target: Cindy Domenico, Boulder County Board of County Commissioners
Goal: Applaud Boulder County, Colorado for extending its fracking ban until mid-2018
Cities and counties around the country have attempted to ban fracking in their communities. Oftentimes the ban proves successful, with natural gas companies avoiding prohibited areas. Other times, however, gas companies sue communities to lift fracking bans. It is difficult to fight oil and gas companies and stop environmental degradation, but Boulder County, Colorado has already successfully implemented a fracking ban and recently fought to extend that ban for three more years.
Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is the process of pumping water, chemicals and sand into the earth to break up the foundation and release natural gas. This process contaminates groundwater, instigates earthquakes and contributes to air pollution in the area. Boulder County, Colorado, was one of the first places within the state to take a stand against fracking. The county passed its initial fracking ban in 2012 and has recently extended it until 2018. Boulder County is aware that a lawsuit from the natural gas industry could happen because of this extension and it is ready to continue to fight to keep the community healthy.
Placing a ban on fracking is bold; extending a fracking ban is tremendous. Commend the Boulder County government for extending its fracking ban and risking expensive lawsuits by signing this petition.
Dear Ms. Domenico,
You are a part of an incredible organization that puts the health of its community first. Thank you for extending Boulder County’s fracking ban into 2018. Standing up to the oil and gas industry is not easy; it can quickly become extremely expensive and emotional. However, the Boulder County government is absolutely doing the right thing by refusing to let the natural gas industry intimidate it.
I urge you and the rest of the county’s government to encourage other counties and cities within the state to ban fracking. Many cities in Colorado have already faced lawsuits intended to intimidate them into dropping their fracking bans. However, with your influence and guidance, these cities could have the same success as Boulder County in keeping the natural gas industry at bay.
Human and environmental health are so important. Thank you for ensuring that the natural gas industry is not allowed to contaminate Boulder County for many years to come. I urge you to keep standing up for what is right for the environment and the people of Boulder County by fighting fracking in your community.
