Target: U.S. House Minority Leader Nanci Pelosi
Goal: Stop the sale of 2,400 acres of the Tonto National Forest to a mining conglomerate that wants to take its copper
The U.S. congress is trying to slip a deal through that would give 2,400 acres of Arizona’s Tonto National Forest to an international mining conglomerate, Rio Tinto. This company has been eyeing the beautiful forest for years due to the large copper deposit that can be found under its roots. To make matters worse, this conglomerate has partnered with Iran in ownership of a uranium mine.
Not only is this land protected in order to conserve the environment, it includes land that is sacred to the region’s Native Americans. Both conservationists and Native tribes worked together to stop the sale of the land last year, but greedy politicians are trying to use the year-end lame-duck session to force it through. The Rio Tinto conglomerate is using millions of dollars in lobbying money to try and attach this sale to must-pass defense legislation in a cheap ploy to appease their corporate masters.
Swift action needs to be taken if we’re to raise awareness and stop the sale of this protected land for profit-based butchering. Sign this petition to urge congress to stop Rio Tinto’s lackeys from slipping this legislation through. Without action, there’s a high chance that this incredible forest which contains sacred Native American sites will be torn apart, destroying a massive section of natural habitat.
Dear Ms. Pelosi,
Currently, special interests are lobbying congress to push through a sale of 2,400 acres of the Tonto National Forest to a mining conglomerate that intends to tear up the land in order to reach the copper deposits below. They’re trying to sneak this sale by us, despite the fact that the land is protected and contains sacred Native American sites, by attaching it to a defense bill during the current lame-duck session.
I wanted to make sure that you were aware of this and also urge you to do everything you can to stop it from happening. We’ve done far too much damage to both our nation’s forests and to the devastated culture of the Native Americans already. Tonto National Park in Arizona is supposed to be protected land. It’s absolutely unacceptable that any members of our congress would try to sell it away so that it can be stripped, polluted, and left to rot.
Allowing this sale to happen would devastate the natural environment of the forest, and would be a slap in the face of a people that we’ve already nearly wiped out and betrayed countless times. I implore you to put a stop to this sneaky attempt to circumvent the legislative process to appease a conglomerate that already owns a uranium mine with Iran. Don’t sell away protected land for the sake of someone else’s profits.
