Target: GrubHub CEO Matt Maloney
Goal: Remove shark fin soup and foie gras from online food delivery site’s menu
GrubHub is a popular online company used to find and order delivery food from restaurants. Currently, the site includes restaurants that serve shark fin soup and foie gras, two dishes that are controversial due to their association with cruel and abusive practices. Allowing customers to order these dishes supports businesses that profit from animal cruelty.
Shark fin soup is still legal in most of the U.S. and remains a popular dish despite the common opinion that shark fin has a bland and flavorless taste. Harvesting the fins requires a brutal method of cutting them off and then discarding the shark into the ocean. Often the shark is still conscious and unable to swim without its fin, leaving the shark to slowly die and sink to the bottom of the ocean. The large demand for shark fins kills around 100 million sharks annually.
Foie gras is prepared by force-feeding ducks or geese so that their livers become diseased and enlarged. Factory farms shove tubes down the bird’s throats, feeding them far more than they would normally eat. The birds’ livers swell up to 10 times their normal size, sometimes causing the birds to die when they rupture. Foie gras remains a delicacy and is found at some upscale restaurants.
Thankfully, increased awareness of the animal cruelty behind these dishes has led several states including Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, and Ohio to ban the sale and possession of shark fins. Additionally, California banned the production and sale of foie gras. By signing the petition below, you will urge GrubHub CEO Matt Maloney to immediately remove shark fin soup and foie gras from its menu.
Dear GrubHub CEO Maloney,
Shark fin soup and foie gras do not deserve a spot on the GrubHub menu. The cruel method of shark finning used to provide fins for soup kills millions of sharks a year through a slow and painful process. Furthermore, foie gras uses a barbaric method of force-feeding ducks and geese by shoving tubes down their throats to enlarge their livers.
Both of these dishes are unethical and have no place on any menu, including GrubHub’s. Please use GrubHub’s popularity to support animal welfare and remove shark fin soup and foie gras from your menu.
