Target: Arsen Avakov, Ukraine Minister of Internal Affairs
Goal: Ascertain the whereabouts and well-being of a man allegedly apprehended by pro-Kyiv forces in Ukraine
Aleksandr Minchenok and his grandmother were driving from Lisichansk to Kharkiv in Ukraine when Minchenok was taken by apparently pro-Kyiv forces. He has not been seen or heard from since, and his family is desperate for news of him. Sign the petition and demand that Ukrainian authorities do everything in their power to locate Aleksandr Minchenok and return him safely to his family.
Minchenok’s last contact with his parents occurred when he called them to say that he and his grandmother had cleared the checkpoints set up along the road to Kharkiv. About half an hour later, his parents received a call from an unknown number informing them that their son had been arrested and detained. When his parents arrived on the scene, however, the story became murky: one person claimed Minchenok had already been released, another that he had been taken by “territorial defense battalion Aidar,” a pro-Kyiv group, Amnesty International reports. Minchenok’s car was later seen being driven in Starobelsk.
It is unclear why Minchenok was targeted, but one thing is perfectly clear: his whereabouts must be revealed immediately. Sign the petition and tell the government to announce whether Minchenok is in detention. If he is not, the government must aid in the search for him. Sign the petition and urge justice for Aleksandr Minchenok and his family.
I am writing to ask for your help in locating Aleksandr Minchenok, who was allegedly detained by Aidar in July 2014. If he is in detention, his family must be informed; they are incredibly anxious over Minchenok’s safety and well-being. If, however, Minchenok is not in detention, I urge the government to aid in the search for him to the best of its ability.
Minchenok and his grandmother had just cleared the checkpoints on the road to Kharkiv when they were set upon by pro-Kyiv forces. According to witnesses, Minchenok was detained by members of Adair. A call to his parents from an unknown man stated that Minchenok had been captured and was being taken to the Prosecutor’s office, but no one has seen or heard from him since.
Transparency is key in any modern government. If the government is holding Minchenok or knows where he is being held, it is the government’s responsibility to make this information known to the family and to the public in general. If Minchenok is not being held by the government or by forces associated with it, the government must pledge its help in locating one of its citizens.
Please pursue justice for Aleksandr Minchenok. Bring him home.
