Target: President of Turkcy, Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Goal: Demand that President Erdogan issue an apology for his rude and sexist remarks toward women
The president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, recently angered dozens of women during a conference for women’s rights. In his sexist speech, he stated that equality between men and women cannot be obtained because their natures are too different. President Erdogan’s words have caused dozens of women to protest and many are angered that the leader of their nation is so misogynistic. Urge President Erdogan to issue an apology to all women and rescind his sexist remarks.
Instead of vying for equality, President Erdogan expressed the need for equal respect for women. This statement is extremely hypocritical considering what he wishes to take away from women. President Erdogan is not a supporter of birth control, and wishes to ban cesarean sections and abortions. He also wants to force women to have at least three children, and believes that feminists are against motherhood. The president called women “delicate” and believes that is one of the main reasons why a woman cannot work in the same field as a man. What many women are taking from his speech is that they shouldn’t be working, but instead staying at home and pumping out babies.
Women are angered that a democratic leader is imposing his conservative and unjust views onto women. A woman has bodily rights, just like a man, but the president wishes to violate these rights. Demand that President Erdogan issue a formal apology to women and work toward being an open minded individual.
Dear President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,
You recently attended a women’s rights conference where you gave a speech that many found to be misogynistic and rude. You made public your desire for every woman to have a minimum of three children, however, if this ideal were made into law, you would be violating a woman’s bodily right. By barring access to birth control, cesarean sections, and abortions, you could potentially be endangering the lives of thousands of women. You claim to want equal respect between the sexes, but you are spouting remarks that are unethical and sexist.
I am writing this letter imploring you to rescind your remarks and apologize. Just because a woman has a vagina does not mean she is unable to work alongside a man. As the president of Turkey, you should be more open minded.
