Target: Nevada State Assemblyman Ira Hansen
Goal: Thank the Assemblyman for stepping down from his position as Assembly Speaker
A Nevada politician recently came under fire for racist, misogynistic, and homophobic remarks he had made in the past. In light of this history coming to surface, the politician stepped down from the State Assembly Speaker post he had been nominated for. Thank him for doing the right thing and removing himself from a position of power because of his remarks.
Following a landslide victory in Nevada with the recent midterm elections, the Republican Party in the state’s assembly nominated a man named Ira Hansen to be Assembly Speaker. In the wake of his nomination, however, years’ worth of racist, homophobic, and sexist columns he wrote for a local newspaper before becoming a member of the state legislature came to light. Thanks to the dedication of activists like those here at ForceChange who would not abide bigotry at the hands of politicians in power, Hansen was pressured to step down from the Speakership and hand it over to someone else.
Though the next politician to take the helm in the State Assembly has not yet been decided, they will no doubt be better suited for it than Hansen. The state of Nevada will no longer have a deeply bigoted Neo-Confederate controlling one of the houses of its legislature, and that is cause for celebration. Sign the petition below to thank Assemblyman Hansen for doing the right thing and bowing to the public outcry calling for him to step down.
Dear Assemblyman Hansen,
I am writing you today about your recent decision to step down as the Nevada State Assembly’s speaker-designate. Specifically, I am taking the time to thank you for your willingness to take action in the face of public outrage over your past comments.
Black, Latino, and other minorities experience oppression in the United States through a system of institutionalized racism that favors white people. Women experience oppression as well, under the patriarchal society in which we live that actively favors men. And, similarly, gay people and those with sexual orientations other than heterosexuality face oppression every day in the face of a society that actively favors heterosexuality and discriminates against those who do not have that orientation. People who are a part of these communities are regularly denied dignity, fair treatment, and even their own lives in the face of this oppression.
Your actions send a clear message that politicians who actively aid and abet oppression of people who are not straight white men should not be placed on pedestals of power. We can only hope that other politicians across the country see your example and start to follow suit–even if it means removing themselves from their own positions of power, as it did in your case.
