Target: Scott Beck, Norman High School Principal
Goal: Adopt students’ demands to protect sexual violence survivors
Three female students in Norman High School in Norman, Oklahoma, were allegedly raped by a fellow student and recently a group of students silently walked out of their classes in solidarity with the survivors. The students demanded that the school improves its protection and support of survivors of sexual violence and its education around the issue. Let the Norman High School principal know that you support the students’ demands and ask that he take the important steps they recommend to make the school more welcoming to survivors and more supportive in their recovery.
The school suspended the alleged perpetrator of all three cases, but the student activists are asking to address the harassment that the survivors faced in the school following their assaults, and have been using the hashtag #yesalldaughters to gain national attention. Some of the students’ demands include that the administration accommodate the survivors’ needs to ensure they feel safe and welcome at school, investigate the allegation of child pornography being distributed among students (videos of the assaults), educate students and faculty about sexual violence, and create a full-time position for a victims advocate to support survivors.
Reporting and healing from sexual violence is always challenging, but when the environment is hostile to the survivor, it becomes almost impossible. Please support the students’ important demands and ask Norman High School to adopt them immediately in order to allow survivors of sexual violence to recover and pursue their education free of harassment and violence.
Dear Mr. Beck,
Recently a group of students in Norman High School silently protested the harassment of sexual violence survivors and delivered a list of demands to administration. I want to express my support to their demands and cause and ask that you comply with them immediately.
All students should be able to attend school safely and in an environment that is free of harassment and bullying, and in the case of sexual violence survivors this requires extra caution and attention. Your school has been getting national attention due to these students’ protests, and you have the opportunity of setting an example to schools all over the country and make it clear that supporting survivors of sexual violence is a top priority in your school. I ask that you take all the necessary steps to guarantee that survivors receive the appropriate support and protection, and that the school community is educated about sexual violence to prevent more cases like this from happening.
The student activists in your school are extremely brave, you should commend their work and respect their demands in order to create a safer environment for all of your students.
