Target: Keith Downey, Chair of the Republican Party of Minnesota
Goal: Immediately remove one of your county chairs following his bigoted comments about Muslims
The chairman of a Minnesota county Republican Party chapter has recently refused to apologize for bigoted and violent remarks about Muslims he made on his Facebook page. He has clearly demonstrated that he cannot be reasoned with, and will only continue to spout his bigotry. Demand that the leadership of Minnesota’s Republican Party immediately remove this chairperson from office.
Jack Whitley, the chair of Minnesota’s Big Stone County Republican Party chapter, recently came under fire for a series of bigoted and anti-Muslim comments he made on his Facebook page. Among other things, he said waterboarding Muslim terrorists was a “waste of resources” because Muslims should just be killed outright, and advocated for bombing Mecca during the annual Muslim pilgrimage to the holy site. When confronted with his remarks by media outlets, he refused to apologize and only dug in deeper, saying that American Muslims should convert to Christianity or leave the country and calling other Americans to arms against them.
Comments like these have no place in our modern political context, and it is extremely worrying that they are coming from a person of authority in one of the country’s main political parties. Sign the petition below to demand that Whitley’s superiors take action and remove him from his position immediately.
Dear Chairperson Downey,
I am writing you today about the behavior of one of your state’s county chairs. The person in question has said extremely offensive and dangerous things about Muslims, and has refused to apologize for them or change his tune. Through this, he has shown himself to be a person unfit for authority in your Republican Party.
The person I am referring to is Jack Whitley, chair of the Big Stone County Republican Party. He has called for the deaths of Muslims in America and abroad, and when confronted about his comments, refused to apologize and advocated for Muslims’ conversion to Christianity or expulsion from the country and said that his his “bravery” for taking a stand and talking about this issue should be considered a “call to arms.” These remarks have only come after a history of similarly bizarre and dangerous commentary on his part, including the idea that “big government” is witchcraft and that the the churches in America have been “feminized and homosexualized” by a “government of Satan.”
You have already condemned his remarks and said that they do not reflect the views of the Republican Party. Whitley’s refusal to back down, however, has put your party in jeopardy. I ask that you take immediate steps to remove Whitley from his chairpersonship and distance your party from him and his comments.
