End Biased Ban on ‘Vicious’ Dog Breeds

Target: Timmy A. Lemoine, Mayor of Moreauville, Louisiana

Goal: End discriminatory ban on Rottweiler and pit bull dog breeds

A village in Louisiana has implemented a ban on select large dog breeds that they are labeling as vicious. Pit bulls and Rottweilers will no longer be allowed in the town, and anyone who owns them will be expected to get rid of them. Those who do not comply with the ban will have their dogs taken and “disposed of,” according to a new ordinance put in place by the council of Moreauville.

The ban will leave dozens of perfectly personable dogs homeless or euthanized, even if they have no prior record of causing harm to humans. According to village officials, the ban was implemented in response to several citizen complaints about an abundance of large dogs on city sidewalks.

Instead of banning all large dogs, residents and leaders are using sensationalized reputations to implement discriminatory bans against two breeds. Because dog fighting rings and gang members often train pit bulls and Rottweilers as fighting dogs, the media and general population have come to associate these breeds with violence.

According to a study performed by the American Temperament Testing Society, pit bulls are no more likely to lash out than Golden Retrievers or Beagles. Despite this fact, pit bulls are the most euthanized breed of pet in America. Officials in Moreauville were unable to name a single instance of one of these dogs attacking or otherwise harming a citizen.

This breed-specific ban is unduly discriminatory against dogs and their owners. Sign the petition below to demand that the village of Moreauville reverse their illogical and unfair ban on pit bulls and Rottweilers.

Dear Mayor Timmy A. Lemoine,

A ban set by village of Moreauville on Rottweilers and pit bulls will force owners to get rid of them. Those who do not comply will be fined, and their dogs will be seized and “disposed of” by officials. If the ban goes into effect, dozens of dogs will be taken away from their homes, forced into shelters, or euthanized.

The popularity of pit bulls and Rottweilers among dog fighters and gang members has resulted in the common misconception that these breeds are prone to violence. The facts show otherwise, with a study proving that pit bulls are no more likely to attack than a Beagle or a Golden Retriever.

It is illogical and outright ridiculous that the village of Moreauville intends to punish perfectly friendly dogs and their owners for no reason, particularly when a city hall spokesperson could not name a single situation where one of the targeted breeds was involved in an attack. We, the undersigned, demand that this ludicrous ban be reversed immediately.
