Stop Abandoning Animals in Parks

Target: Terre Haute Parks Superintendent Eddie Bird

Goal: Protect cats, dogs, and other animals from being heartlessly abandoned in local parks

Local parks in Terre Haute, Indiana has been dealing with an increase in animals that have been left behind by their owners. They are opening an investigation to catch the owners who have been illegally discarding their unwanted pets in this cruel way.

The Terre Haute city parks experience many cold nights, and it is clear that the domestic animals cannot withstand this type of weather. In 2014, park authorities saw a large number of cats, rabbits, reptiles, and dogs abandoned in the park. Some generous residents and employees have helped adopt and bring the animals to shelters, but the park continues to be overloaded with animals.

The park needs help in finding the irresponsible owners of these pets. There are civilized ways to give animals away and abandoning them in the park is not one of them. The park superintendent is working on getting funds to place more warning signs to deter people from dumping their unwanted pets, and on getting cameras installed to catch the culprits.

This is not an isolated issue. Animals are regularly being abandoned in parks all over the United States. In order to reduce the number of lost, abandoned, and neglected animals, pet owners need to utilize the animal shelters in their hometowns. This is where animals are nursed back to health and prepped for adoption by new owners. It is not legal in any state to abandon animals in parks. It is dangerous and it needs to be stopped.

Please sign this petition to ask pet owners to stop dumping their animals in local parks.

Dear Eddie Bird,

Thank you for bringing forth an issue that has plagued a lot of local parks nationwide. Pet owners regularly abandon their unwanted animals in cold parks to fend for themselves, instead of dropping them off at an animal shelter. Dumping animals at parks is very illegal and owners can get fined for it. If an owner can no longer care for their pet, they need to bring it to an authorized animal shelter.

Thank you for finding ways to get owners to stop leaving their animals. You have asked for the public’s help to phone the police, animal control centers, and park officials if they catch one of these owners leaving their pets. You are also planning on adding bigger signs and cameras to the parks to make sure that this doesn’t happen anymore. Please continue these aggressive efforts.
