Target: Ira Hansen, Nevada State Assembly speaker-designate
Goal: Urge Ira Hansen to immediately resign from office for his bigoted views
Nevada’s State Assembly recently nominated Republican Ira Hansen to be its Assembly Speaker. Unfortunately for Nevadans, Hansen has an extremely detailed history of sexism, racism, and homophobia. With both houses of the state legislature as well as the governorship in the hands of Republicans for the first time since the Great Depression, Hansen would face little resistance in guiding policy. Demand that Hansen resign from office immediately.
Following the midterm elections in early November, the new Republican majority in Nevada’s State Assembly nominated Ira Hansen as its candidate for Assembly Speaker. Hansen has been a state legislator in Nevada since 2011, but before that he wrote columns for a local newspaper for 13 years, and in those columns he provided a very clear account of where his politics lay. Among other things, he accused the Clinton Administration of orchestrating the Oklahoma City Bombing, said that the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s was a problem and that women are not fit for combat in the military, routinely used the word “Negro” to refer to African Americans and wrote that they should show a little more gratitude for being freed from the bonds of slavery by white people, and time and time again claimed gay people were pedophiles and supporters of the North America Man/Boy Love Association. As the cherry on top of the sundae, he’s said he wrote all his columns under a Confederate flag hanging on his wall for inspiration.
The vote to instate Hansen as Assembly Speaker is approaching, so the need for action is great. No one like him should be put in any greater position of power. Sign the petition below to demand that Hansen immediately resign from office.
Dear Assemblyman Hansen,
I am writing you today about your recent nomination for speaker of the Nevada State Assembly–more specifically, how your nomination intersects with some of the comments you have made in the past. The content of these comments is extremely alarming and do not befit a prominent state politician of our day and age.
The comments in question come from the series of columns you wrote for the Sparks Tribune for 13 years starting in 1994. In these columns, you ran the gamut of bigoted and problematic politics: homophobia, misogyny, racism–they’re all there. What’s even more alarming is that over the course of the 13 years, your views did not seem to develop or move away from these prejudices. Indeed, your actions since taking office in 2011 seem to suggest that you still hold to these views. This raises a lot of concerns about the possibility of you becoming the Assembly Speaker and having increased power to guide the state’s legislation and agenda.
Bearing this issue in mind, I urge you to either publicly and explicitly denounce your past comments or resign from office immediately. Your views are regressive and bigoted, and have no place in a modern political sphere.
