Target: G. Paul Beaumaster, County Attorney for Rice County, MN
Goal: Charge man responsible for shooting family dog
Recently, a man in Rice County, Minnesota shot and killed a family dog while waiting in a hunting stand for wildlife. The man admitted to killing the dog, named Diesel, right away, claiming that he thought it was a stray. Understandably, Diesel’s family is devastated at the loss of their pet. It is technically legal to shoot dogs in Rice County, however, there are a few loopholes that make the law confusing. The dog’s owners believe that the hunter’s actions were illegal and are demanding justice for their murdered pet.
A hunter may shoot a dog in Rice County if it is chasing big game, but only between the first day of January until the 14th of July and if discharge of a gun is allowed at the time of shooting. Diesel was not chasing game when he was shot, nor was he presenting any threat to his surroundings. Diesel’s fate is tragic, though it can be made into a valuable lesson that could ultimately save other pets’ lives.
Diesel’s death is the result of a hunter breaking the law. The family is hoping that G. Paul Beaumaster, County Attorney, will decide to charge the hunter with animal cruelty as well as attempt to make the existing law clearer to prevent this tragedy from ever happening again. Join the family in its request by signing this petition and urhing Attorney Beaumaster to charge the hunter for unlawfully killing the beloved Diesel.
Dear County Attorney Beaumaster,
Diesel, a family dog, was recently killed by a hunter near Northfield. The dog’s family has approached you with a plea to charge the hunter with animal cruelty and help make the hunting laws pertaining to dogs clearer so this tragedy does not happen again. I am writing in support of their request. The hunter who shot Diesel did so illegally, but may have been confused about his rights.
The hunter admitted that the dog was not chasing big game; he thought Diesel was a stray. It is not yet clear if the hunter believes that his actions were legal. However, the law for shooting dogs is confusing. Please ensure that this hunter is appropriately punished for his illegal actions and encourage a change in the law so this tragedy is less likely to happen in the future.
Please help Diesel’s family save other dogs from the same fate.
