Target: The Daily Show host, Jon Stewart
Goal: Applaud skit that highlighted inhumane gestation crates and encouraged better treatment of pigs
Recently, The Daily Show featured a segment on the lives of factory-farmed pigs, particularly the rampant use of inhumane gestation crates on pig farms. These tiny crates prevent pigs from stretching, turning around and making themselves comfortable. The farm industry insists that these crates are necessary to keep pregnant pigs from fighting with each other. Despite this questionable logic, the host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, broadcasted his disgust and disbelief at the use of gestation crates, using his television presence to encourage a ban against them.
New Jersey, Stewart’s home state, is currently deciding whether or not to ban gestation crates. The final decision lies with the state’s governor, Chris Christie. Stewart used his segment to show video of distressed pigs in gestation crates as well as provide gruesome facts about the crates. Sows are pregnant for 80 percent of their lives, which means a sow is forced to live in a gestation crate for the majority of her life. Most pigs literally go insane within the confines of the crate. Stewart insisted that gestation crates are cruel, and urged Christie to ban the crates in New Jersey.
The factory-farm industry’s dirty secrets are surfacing. Stewart is helping the exposure movement through his recent segment. The more consumers know, the more likely they are to demand better treatment for farmed animals. Sign this petition to thank Stewart for his activism.
Dear Mr. Stewart,
I am writing to thank you for your segment on pig gestation crates. You have a diverse, large audience; your factual, yet humorous approach to many issues in the country is unique and respected. Thank you for directing your segment at someone who can make a difference in the lives of pigs, Governor Chris Christie.
It is my hope that Christie decides to ban the use of gestation crates within the state of New Jersey. The public is now better informed about the confining and abusive nature of gestation crates. The more people know about the cruelties that factory farmed animals face every day, the better chance those animals have of a more peaceful existence, before slaughter.
Please continue to use your influential platform to inspire change in the lives of animals raised for consumption.
