Target: Brian Morris, U.S. District Judge
Goal: Commend judge for striking down same-sex marriage ban
In a recent court decision, U.S. District Judge Brian Morris found a Montana law prohibiting same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional. In his decision, Morris cited the fact that children brought up by same-sex parents “…fare just as well as their peers physically, psychologically, emotionally, cognitively and socially.” This is a glorious victory for marriage equality and brings the United States one step closer to being a more inclusive and accepting place. The case was brought to U.S. District Court by four same-sex couples backed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The decision has rendered same-sex legal in Montana immediately, meaning that all same-sex marriages conducted in other states are now officially recognized and the state must start giving marriage licenses to those wishing to marry.
Same-sex marriage is becoming more widely legalized in the United States, but it is still under threat from those who seek to define marriage as only being between one man and one woman. The view is widely held even though there is no legal basis for continuing to define marriage in this way. For example, Montana Attorney General Tim Fox has said that he will challenge this decision in appeals courts until he cannot challenge it any more.
Thank Judge Morris for making the right decision and continuing to strengthen the precedent of marriage equality for all in the United States by signing the petition below.
Dear Judge Morris,
Your recent decision to strike down a Montana law banning same-sex marriage is a wonderful step toward true equality in the United States and deserves formal commendation. Marriage is a beautiful institution and all people deserve to experience it regardless of their sexuality. Also, as you noted in your decision, children from same-sex families are just as well off as children from heterosexual families.
I urge you to continue to do good in your position as a U.S. district judge as equality is still under threat. For example, Montana Attorney General Tim Fox has said that he will challenge your decision in appeals court. Fox will surely fail as there is no true legal basis for marriage being defined as being between one man and one woman, but there are still those who wish to deny their fellow Americans the right to marry.
On behalf of all like-minded individuals, I would like to thank you for making the right decision and allowing all people to legally marry whomever they choose.
