Applaud Website’s Expansion of Gender and Sexual Orientation Options

Target: OkCupid CEO, Sam Yagan

Goal: Applaud dating website for expanding gender and sexual orientation options

The popular dating website known as OkCupid recently gave users more options when it comes to choosing their sexual orientation and gender. The changes were not publicly announced and OkCupid said it is still working with users on the new feature, so only some users have been granted the option. The new sexuality orientation now adds queer, asexual, demisexual, heteroflexible, homoflexible, pansexual and questioning. The new gender choices include genderqueer, agender, intersex, transgender, pangender, transmasculine, transfeminine and two spirit.

The expansion of sexual orientation and gender choices allows users to describe themselves more accurately. Not only will it help them have a more positive experience in online dating, it will hopefully pave the way for other online dating platforms to add these choices as well. In a world that is not always accepting of the LGBTQ community, it is important for small steps such as this to be applauded.

LGBTQ people experience violence and sexual assault in greater numbers than non-LGBTQ do, according to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey. The recent expansion of terms may lessen the number of future attacks by clearing up any ambiguity between users on the dating site. It is important that we recognize how much this helps the LGBTQ community and encourage other social media platforms to follow suit. Please sign the petition below to thank OkCupid.

Dear Mr. Sam Yagan,

I would like to thank you for adding new sexual orientation and gender options on your online dating site, OkCupid. This will now allow users to more accurately describe themselves and have a much more positive online dating experience. Many social media users in the LGBTQ community have difficulty choosing the appropriate descriptions and can feel neglected in this regard, so it is great that you are taking action to correct this.

In addition, a much higher number of LGBTQ people are sexually assaulted or violently attacked in comparison to non-LGBTQ, so hopefully this change will decrease the number of sexual assaults and attacks on LGBTQ members by clearing up any ambiguity between OkCupid members that could lead to problems.

Please continue to make positive moves forward and support the LGBTQ community so that we can make online dating and other social media sites much more friendly and welcoming places. By doing this, we can make great progress now and in the future.
