Target: United Arab Emirates President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan
Goal: Remove the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim American Society from your list of designated terrorist organizations
The government of the United Arab Emirates recently released an updated list of groups the country considers designated terrorist organizations. Among the groups in that list are the American advocacy nonprofits the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim American Society. Demand that the United Arab Emirates remove these organizations from its list.
In a bid to crack down on one of its foremost political rivals, the Islamist organization the Muslim Brotherhood, the government of the United Arab Emirates recently updated its list of designated terrorist organizations with a score of additional organizations with alleged connections to the Brotherhood. Alarmingly, that list included the American organizations CAIR and the Muslim American Society. These groups are nonprofit civic advocacy organizations that provide support to the American Muslim community. In the past they have both been accused by right-wing ideologues in the United States of having connections to the Muslim Brotherhood and other terrorist organizations, but neither are classified as terrorist organizations by the American government.
It seems the United Arab Emirates has taken the conspiracy theories of the American far-right at face value, without any consideration of the jeopardy they’ve put these nonprofits in by designating them terrorists on par with ISIS and al-Qaeda. Sign the petition below to urge the United Arab Emirates to revoke their designation of these two nonprofits.
Dear President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan,
I am writing you today about your country’s recent designation of several American nonprofits as terrorist organizations. The designations are inaccurate and extremely damaging to the efforts of these nonprofits here in the United States. I urge you to reconsider and revoke your designation.
The nonprofits in question, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim American Society, have been accused of being covert fronts for the Muslim Brotherhood in America by right-wing ideologues and conspiracy theorists for years. You seem to have bought into these conspiracy theories, despite the fact that the United States government, which has a much greater vested interest in identifying dangerous organizations in their territory than your country does, has never labelled these nonprofits terrorist organizations and has shown no indication that it will in the future.
CAIR and the Muslim American Society are already under a constant barrage of fire from anti-Muslim commentators here in the United States. Your designation of these nonprofits as terrorist organizations only serves to legitimize the conspiracies of these anti-Muslim extremists and to make it harder for them to do the civic work that they were created to do. I urge you to remove these organizations from your list of designated terrorist groups.
