Target: McGraw-Hill Education CEO Douglas L. Peterson
Goal: Praise publisher for removing misleading information about climate change from school textbooks
McGraw-Hill Education has removed language from their textbooks designed to mislead students about the realities of climate change, just before submitting them to the Texas State Board of Education. Previous versions had contained inaccurate information that supported climate change denial, but the publisher has committed to removing or altering specific passages to make them reflect scientific fact.
Textbooks approved by the Texas Board of Education end up in classrooms across the country, so any information approved by them is spread into the minds of millions of young students. The board has previously approved books containing misinformation about evolution, climate change, and even the history of slavery in the U.S. By raising awareness about this issue and increasing pressure with petitions like ForceChange’s Tell State Board of Education to Advocate for Scientific Textbooks, citizens are helping to ensure that the most popular publishers submitting to the board are no longer spreading climate change denial.
By signing this petition, you’ll express your appreciation to McGraw-Hill for taking the side of science and refusing to be bullied into spreading dangerous lies. Misinformation about climate change leads to inaction, which will only make the effects of climate change worse, increasing damage to ecosystems and the human way of life around the world. Helping to support the truth could save millions from environmental disasters.
Dear Mr. Peterson,
I understand that your publishing company has decided to remove misleading and inaccurate information about climate change from your textbooks ahead of the submission deadline to the Texas Board of Education. I wanted to thank you for correcting these falsehoods which would not only have been detrimental to the education of children, but could also have worsened a situation which threatens countless human and animal lives around the globe.
Climate change is an extremely serious issue that has already caused billions of dollars in damage and lost income, as well as the loss of human life and the devastation of natural animal habitats. When we refuse to acknowledge and uphold the truth of the situation, it becomes impossible to take meaningful action. It’s even worse to mislead a generation of impressionable children about the realities that they will be forced to deal with when they become adults.
Because of this, I wanted to submit my appreciation for your actions. As you well know, textbooks approved by the Texas Board of Education are used by schools across the nation, so any inaccuracies in your textbooks mislead more than just Texas children. It’s essential that you maintain a level of responsibility and intellectual honesty in the information you present. The consequences of failing to do so could be devastating.
