Target: Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott
Goal: Stop denying the problem of climate change and take action to reduce emissions
While President Obama and China’s President Jinping signed an agreement to limit carbon emissions, Australia still has not done anything about climate change. Climate change is the cause for many of the world’s bizarre phenomena. The drought in California, mega-storms in the northeast, and snow in Cairo — scientists speculate all of these events are occurring because of climate change. When some of the biggest carbon emitters in the world admit that climate change is a severe problem, Australia should do the same. Demand Prime Minister Tony Abbott to draft laws to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the problem of climate change.
On November 13, 2014, 400 protesters gathered on Sydney’s Bondi Beach to mock Prime Minister Abbott’s stance on climate change. The protesters buried their heads in the sand, as many political cartons depict the ostrich sticking its head in the sand when there is danger. Protesters were young adults, parents, children, and even men in business suits. The protesters were there to express their frustration with Prime Minister Abbott’s lack of concern and contempt of climate change.
In 2009, Prime Minister Tony Abbott called climate change “crap” and even said that the burning of coal is “good for humanity.” Scientists have thoroughly debunked that statement. The burning of coal is not healthy for any human being, or any living creature. Coal produces carbon dioxide, a gas that contributes to climate change. This gas insulates heat, and through the burning of coal along with other human activities, the planet’s global temperature is increasing.
The people of Australia realize that climate change is a serious and real problem, but the prime minister is not listening. Sign this petition and demand Prime Minister Abbott take his head out of the sand and deal with the problem of climate change.
Dear Prime Minister Tony Abbott,
Recently, 400 protesters demanded that your administration take action against climate change. I find it ludicrous that you refuse to believe that this phenomenon exists, especially when so many scientists have proof. Even if you do not believe the scientists, simply observing what is happening to our climate should be enough to convince you.
I am writing this letter urging you to take action. I want Australia to set a carbon emissions limit. I want Australia to limit the amount of trees being cut down, and set up solar panels. I want the country to be proactive instead of sticking their heads in the sand. Your citizens are demanding action, and as the prime minister you should be listening to them.
