Stop University’s Cruel Experiments on Cats

Target: Teresa Sullivan, University of Virginia President

Goal: Demand the University of Virginia stop experimenting on live cats as part of their training programs

Professors at the University of Virginia are cruelly experimenting on live cats for training purposes despite the fact that the use of live animals in medical testing is outdated and unnecessary. These poor creatures do not deserve a life of needless suffering when practical, effective alternatives exist.

Students enrolled in pediatric residency programs use live cats for medical purposes during their training at the University of Virginia. Approximately 94 percent of similar pediatric residency programs at other schools use human-based training methods as a humane and effective alternative to animal testing. Studies have shown that the cruelty of animal testing in medical experiments is completely unnecessary and the practice is not only inhumane, but outdated as well.

In addition, teaching these students to show such an extreme lack of compassion for suffering animals is entirely unacceptable when they are training to have careers working with sick and injured children, which requires a great deal of the same compassion and empathy. The University of Virginia already has a medical simulation center that can be used to provide the proper training to its pediatric residency program students, so ending the use of live cats during training is an easily attainable change that can be made immediately.

Urge the university’s president to immediately ban the use of live cats for any medical experimentation or training purposes at the school. For the benefit of the cats and students alike, ask that she implement humane alternatives for the pediatric residency programs instead.

Dear Dr. Sullivan,

As an animal welfare advocate, I am appalled that the University of Virginia allows the use of live cats in medical experiments related to its pediatric residency programs. Allowing these animals to needlessly suffer when humane and effective alternatives exist is cruel and unacceptable.

As you may know, 94 percent of similar pediatric residency programs at other schools use human-based training methods as alternatives to the cruelty of animal testing. Studies show that such alternatives are just as effective as animal testing, if not more so, and they spare these poor creatures a lifetime of pain and suffering. Further, these students are training to work with sick and injured children and must possess compassion and empathy to work in the pediatric medical field. Teaching these students not to show compassion or empathy for the suffering cats they are experimenting on seems extremely contradictory, especially when a medical simulation center already exists at the school.

I urge you to immediately ban the use of live cats for training purposes at your university and implement humane alternative training methods, such as human-based methods, instead.
