Target: Nampa School District Superintendent, David Peterson
Goal: Fire a teacher for snapping a rabbit’s neck in front of his students
A teacher in Idaho snapped the neck of a rabbit, skinned it, and chopped up its body in front of his 10th grade students, stating that he was showing how animals are processed for food. The teacher, whose name has not been released, has already come under fire for the demonstration, but the Nampa School District has so far not decided on any particular action against the teacher. Nampa School District spokeswoman Allison Westfall said that the demonstration is not part of the school’s curriculum.
While students were allowed to leave before the teacher snapped the rabbit’s neck, it is still a deplorable act to perform in front of a 10th grade class. Due to mounting pressure, the teacher has apologized to any students who were disturbed by his actions. At the very least, this teacher should have cleared it with school administrators and parents before attempting this lesson, but he probably did not because he knew it wouldn’t be approved. There are many other ways to teach how food gets on our table, but slaughtering an animal in front of 10th grade students is not the correct choice.
By slaughtering an animal in front of students, this teacher demonstrated a serious lack of judgment–not a commendable trait for those teaching children and teenagers. Please sign this petition and urge the Nampa School District to take firm action by firing this teacher.
Dear Superintendent Peterson,
One of your teachers recently killed and slaughtered a rabbit in front of his class of 10th graders. Such an act demonstrates a serious lack of judgement on the part of this teacher, and he should be immediately fired from your school.
While I fully understand that he was trying to demonstrate how food is processed, this is a very disturbing way to teach this lesson and he could have found many different ways to do so. Educational videos have been made for this reason and get the point across just as well, without any unnecessary and cruel animal slaughter.
Please keep the public informed on the proceedings of this investigation and repercussions and consider firing this teacher for his brutal lesson. We do not need someone with such poor judgment teaching young students.
