Thank Animal Shelter for Removing Barbaric Gas Chamber

Target: Bill Melton, Gaston County Police Captain

Goal: Thank the Gaston County Animal Shelter for removing their gas chamber used for euthanasia

Before the use of lethal injection, carbon monoxide gas chambers were used to euthanize unwanted animals. The use of this steel device was fairly common all over the state of North Carolina. In 2010, public pressure successfully prompted the commissioners of Gaston County to make lethal injection the primary measure to euthanize unwanted animals at the shelter. Since then, the gas chamber has not been used regularly, except to euthanize animals too dangerous or unsafe for the animal shelter employees to administer lethal injection to, a very rare situation.

Despite the rarity of its use, the gas chamber was a symbol of inhumanity and Gaston County finally decided it was time to move forward and remove the large steel box all together. After the gas chamber was removed from the shelter, it was taken to a scrap metal yard in Dallas, Texas to be scrapped. This decision to get rid of the gas chamber is the first of many positive changes being made at the animal shelter.

Now that the gas chamber is gone, the space is being renovated to accommodate more animals at the shelter. Sign this petition and thank Gaston County Police Captain, Bill Melton, and many others at the Gaston County Animal Shelter for his decision to move forward and for his efforts to make the use of gas chambers to euthanize animals obsolete.

Dear Captain Melton,

I was very shocked to learn that gas chambers were once very commonly used in your state of North Carolina to euthanize animals. Therefore, I am very happy to hear that the gas chamber from the Gaston County Animal Shelter has been removed and scrapped. I believe that the gas chamber was a heavy reminder of the past and a symbol of inhumanity. It had no place in the bright future of your community.

I understand that this decision to get rid of the gas chamber is only the first of many positive changes to come to the Gaston County Animal Shelter, and I am very excited to see what else you have in store for this wonderful community. I hope you continue your efforts to make Gaston County a better place for the people and animals of your community.

  2. MaureenLoCascio says:

Gas chambers destroyed millions of Jews what good did this barbaric act achieve? It showed the lack of human caring; of people with no respect for life.If we allow gas chambers to rob healthy pets of a chance to have a caring home we display our cruelty again + again

  3. All methods of shelter killing should be made illegal. All life is precious. All animals have a right to live.
