Target: Alika Atay, Sustainable Hawaiian Agriculture for the Keiki and the Aina
Goal: Thank the SHAKA Movement for initiating a moratorium on GMOs on Maui
On the Hawaiian island of Maui, voters have passed a groundbreaking initiative to ban genetically modified foods and farming until GMOs are proven to be safe for the environment and public health. This is the nation’s strictest action against GMOs and agribusiness giants. Thank the efforts of Sustainable Hawaiian Agriculture for the Keiki and the Aina (or SHAKA) movement for submitting the moratorium and instigating concern for the cause.
The anti-GMO initiative is a huge victory for activists. The law will affect the agribusiness corporation of Monsanto and the chemical company, Dow. Monsanto conducts the most GMO experiments and testing in the county. GMOs are short for “genetically modified organisms.” GMOs refer to plants that have been genetically engineered with the DNA from other plants, bacteria, or viruses. These organisms do not occur naturally or by traditional crossbreeding. Any farm found growing GMOs will be fined up to $50,000 a day. The hefty fine shows that citizen and environmental health is truly important to this community. Maui has been called “GMO ground zero” for the last time. Voters have chosen a future free of experimental foods.
The SHAKA movement submitted the first-ever citizen-initiated bill in the county. With over 9,000 signatures, the anti-GMO bill was added to the ballot. This decision was not made by legislators but by the community on Election Day. The SHAKA movement should be proud for standing up to large corporations and demanding safe and healthy food for all. By signing this petition, you are thanking this grassroots organization for initiating the moratorium on GMOs. Hopefully, other communities around the nation will be inspired to question the health of GMOs.
Dear Mr. Atay,
SHAKA’s impressive outreach and groundbreaking efforts are to thank for the GMO moratorium in Maui. Maui is known for GMO farming and testing. Without your ballot initiative, this island’s community would still be in the hands of Dow and Monsanto. This moratorium is the strictest action against GMOs yet in the U.S. I want to thank you for your progressive action.
Even after Monsanto and Dow degraded your campaign, the voters knew which side to take. Chemicals should not be allowed in our food. I hope other communities around the nation decide to take a stand on this pressing issue. The revolution of GMOs will not stop unless citizens are exposed to the truth. I commend you for your action against the bullies of agribusiness. Thank you for instigating this groundbreaking moratorium.
