Success: City Approves Speedy Animal Adoptions

Target:  Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel

Goal: Thank Mayor Rahm Emanuel for speeding up adoptions in Chicago animal shelters

Recently, the Chicago City Council approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposal to speed up animal adoptions. A previous ForceChange petition applauded him for creating this proposal. This will not only help relieve taxpayers of the job of sheltering 12,000 stray animals, but it will improve animal identification. The new regulation will allow the city to declare any animal that ends up impounded and remains unclaimed by owners within three days to be “property” of the Commission on Animal Care and Control. By doing this, these animals can be adopted after the three days.

Another benefit of the new ordinance is that it allows adoptions or transfers to other shelters or facilities immediately, which can help save more pets from euthanasia. The ordinance does not have any effect on animals that are brought to shelters that have some form of identification, so as long as someone’s pet has it on them, they are still held to the previous regulations.

While some feared this new ordinance would lead to more euthanized pets, it is much more likely to do the opposite. Chicago roughly impounds around 23,000 animals a year and is forced to euthanize around 6,000 a year. This may seem like an extreme amount, but this number has actually gone down in recent years and will hopefully continue to drop with this ordinance. By allowing the easy transfer of animals between facilities, shelters can accommodate pets where they have room and make more room by quickly adopting out others.

This ordinance helps the people of Chicago by saving them money and will hopefully result in more impounded animals finding loving homes. Please thank Mayor Rahm Emanuel for his hard work at pushing for this proposal.

Dear Mayor Rahm Emanuel,

I would like to offer my congratulations and praise for your success in the passing of your plan to speed up animal adoptions. This will not only help save Chicago’s taxpayers money, but will result in many shelter pets finding loving homes more quickly. Another benefit to this ordinance is that it might encourage citizens to properly license their animals in case they go missing.

You are doing a great thing for your city and I would like to thank you for all your hard work. Animal welfare is greatly under appreciated in many areas, so it is necessary that we have people like you to make others understand its importance.
