Target: Kolin Group
Goal: Stop a dirty energy company from wrongly destroying any more natural areas to construct coal plants
Recently, locals of the western Turkish village Yirka had an intense, brutal battle with a company attempting to erect a coal-fired power plant in place of an olive tree grove. Kolin Group (Kolin), a Turkish construction firm, came at all hours of the day and night to bulldoze the grove before it even received approval from the government to do so. In attempts to save their livelihood, the villagers guarded the grove in shifts, only to be detained by guards employed by Kolin. The government eventually ruled in favor of the locals, though their olive tree grove is destroyed and Kolin is to blame.
Too often dirty energy producers take advantage of small communities, bullying them and destroying their livelihood without government permission, while giving nothing back to the people of the area. Yirka lost 6,000 olive trees in its ordeal with Kolin; trees that are currently being replaced with saplings, with no help from the dirty-energy giant. After these 6,000 trees were bulldozed, a Turkish court ruled that the coal-fired power plant building project was illegal. Turkey has a national olive grove protection law, which is the basis for the illegality of erecting the power plant. This victory for the Yirkan people was hard won. Security guards and other employees of Kolin overstepped their authority by physically removing the people protecting the groves and then bulldozing the entire plot.
Kolin must stop its illegal proceedings in all communities. The company destroyed thousands of trees for nothing, as it was aware of the olive tree laws but refused to abide by them. By signing this petition you demand that Kolin stop destroying livelihoods and dreams for another dirty plant. The people of the world are watching; Kolin cannot hide its greed.
Dear Kolin Group,
Coal-fired power plants are harmful to the environment in many ways. Your company adds fuel to the destructive nature of coal by bullying communities and taking land that is under legal protection. There is no excuse for how Kolin treated the community of Yirka, Turkey. Kolin destroyed 6,000 olive trees, regardless of the legal repercussions that would inevitably come along with the decision to do so.
Olive trees are protected by the Turkish government, under a national olive grove protection law. Of course, you knew about this law and chose to ignore it. I urge you to stop destroying local communities and natural areas to erect dirty-energy power plants. The world is watching Kolin’s every move; fear-mongering tactics will not be tolerated.
Stop destroying peoples’ lives. Stop destroying protected trees and environmentally necessary areas. No amount of dirty energy is worth the sacrifice of these pristine areas.
