Target: Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility Communications Director Geoff Potter
Goal: Praise the voter-approved expansion of background checks that closes Washington’s gun show loophole
On November 4, 2014, voters in Washington State approved a bill that expands background checks and effectively closes the “gun show loophole,” which allowed people to purchase guns without submitting to a background check at gun shows. The measure also included mandatory background checks for all online gun sales within the state. Exceptions are made for gun transfers within the family and the sale of antique guns.
This bill represents a ray of hope for gun control advocates who are fighting an uphill battle against the NRA and pro-gun lobbyists who continue to insist that guns are safe despite the drastic increase in mass shootings in the U.S. in the past few years. Thanks to the efforts of people like the ForceChange community for signing petitions like Close the Gun Show Loophole, we’re finally starting to effect positive change.
Sign this petition to thank gun safety activists in Washington state for their work to protect lives from deadly mass shootings like the one in Marysville, Washington, which ended in the deaths of five young students. We must stand by those who are continuing to fight even in the face of powerful and well-funded opposition.
Dear Mr. Potter,
Thank you for all of your efforts in creating and promoting the bill to expand background checks and close the online and gun show loopholes. These measures will go a long way in protecting people from the massive gun violence problem we currently have in the U.S. Not only that, but you’ve proven that it is possible to expand gun control in a country where the NRA and other powerful pro-gun lobbyists are using their considerable wealth to spread lies and fear-mongering about the issue.
Many people have begun to despair about ever seeing an end to the horrific mass shooting problem we have in this country. They are becoming more and more frequent while the NRA makes it seemingly impossible to pass any kind of decent gun control measure. Your fight has proven that the NRA is not invincible, because the truth is that the people of this nation want stricter gun control laws.
In the wake of the Marysville school shooting, the passing of this bill is a light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel. I sincerely hope that you keep up your efforts and continue to inspire other states to pass tougher background checks and close dangerous loopholes in their gun control laws. Thank you again for everything you’ve done for the people of Washington State.
