Target: Fox News personality Sean Hannity
Goal: Acknowledge and report on the hundreds of prominent Muslims who condemn ISIS
All too often, Sean Hannity and other conservative commentators spew the ill-informed commentary that Muslims do not condemn ISIS and its actions. Prominent Muslims the world over, however, have done exactly that. Demand that Sean Hannity acknowledge the real statements and opinions of Muslims instead of implying that they agree with ISIS.
In the wake ISIS’s rise, Sean Hannity was one among many wondering why Muslims in America and around the world weren’t coming out in droves to condemn the organization and its brutal tactics. This has been a ubiquitous refrain for Hannity and other conservatives after any instance of violence committed by a Muslim, the implication being that most Muslims are secretly okay with ISIS and can’t bring themselves to publicly denounce them. The irony is, of course, that prominent Muslims have indeed publicly condemned ISIS, and that news outlets, including Hannity’s, never acknowledge or report on their statements. Just recently, for instance, hundreds of Muslim scholars from around the world published an open letter to the leader of ISIS explaining how everything they’re doing is contrary to Islam and the Qur’an, but received extremely limited media coverage. This is just one instance among many.
Conservatives’ perpetual questioning of Muslims’ loyalty to ISIS and their refusal to acknowledge when Muslims actually condemn ISIS creates a positive feedback loop where the audience is led to believe that Muslims secretly condone and encourage ISIS’s actions, feeding a culture of fear and hatred. Sign the petition below to demand that Sean Hannity actually acknowledge and report on Muslims’ widespread condemnation of ISIS instead of ignoring it to fit his own Islamophobic narrative.
Dear Mr. Hannity,
I am writing you today about your question whenever ISIS commits a new atrocity : “Where are the Muslims coming out and condemning ISIS?” I’m wondering why you ask this and then flatly ignore Muslims whenever they actually do condemn ISIS.
Recently a coalition of hundreds of prominent Muslim scholars and clerics from around the world published a letter to the leaders of ISIS condemning the organization’s actions and explaining how everything they have been doing has been contrary to Islam and the Qur’an. One would think this would be a welcome news story for you and your show, but you (and most others) have completely ignored it, and have continued to ask “Why aren’t Muslims condemning ISIS?” What’s worse is that this coalition’s statement has not been a unique event–indeed, hundreds upon hundreds of prominent Muslims in the United States and abroad have explicitly denounced ISIS. The issue is not that Muslims refuse to come out against ISIS–it’s that you refuse to report on them and give them a voice in the media when they do.
The idea that Muslims should feel obligated to explicitly condemn ISIS to be taken seriously is an issue of Islamophobia in and of itself, but I want you to know that there are indeed Muslims condemning ISIS. Stop ignoring their statements and their voices. I urge you to answer your own question and acknowledge and report on the myriad statements denouncing ISIS that so many Muslims have made.
